Work Life Balance – Why It’s Important to Spend More Time With Your Family

Achieving better work life balance means you can spend more time with your family. You could also say that if you spend more time with your family then your work life balance will improve.

When you are over busy with work and rushing about from place to place you realise that an important area of your life which often gets neglected is keeping in touch and connecting with your family.

Why is important to spend time with your family?

  • you share genes
  • noticing family likenesses in appearance and personality
  • you share a common history

Share the fascination of discovering your roots and exploring your family history:

You share looks and ways of being. Notice what you have you have in common and consider if this is due to your genes or environment.

You can discover things about yourself: you may notice that what irritates or you admire about various family members may reflect something you can discover about yourself

Family rituals

You will have absorbed ways to do things during your childhood so much so that these seem to be ‘the way to do something’. As an adult you always have the choice to do things differently especially when you discover that other families do things differently.

Family transitions

Families tend to come together at times of transition: typically birth, marriage and death. These are opportunities for families to re-connect with each other and with extended families too.

Challenges of connecting with your family

You may not get on with them and may not understand each other’s worlds

Listen more and try to understand better where they are coming from. Imagine being in their shoes and looking at you from their point of view.

You may get irritated by them.

Be assertive and say ‘when you do that, I feel….’ Rather than ‘You make me sick…!’

You may open up old resentments

Because of your shared history it’s easy to re-visit old arguments and disagreements perhaps started because either you are or were jealous of them or they are or were jealous of you. Imagine seeing the two of you through an observer’s eyes and notice how doing that can change your perception of what happened and also what you need to do to make things better between you.

What can you do to improve relationship with your family?

Communicate more effectively: listen more than talk.

Accept differences: you may share a family but part of your worlds are different.

Notice what you have in common and consider if this is due to your genes or environment. You can discover things about yourself.

You may notice that what irritates or you admire you about various family members may reflect something that you can discover about yourself.

Connecting with your family is an important part of work life balance.
