View Full Version : faster hdd/sdd soon
as the title says, hdd/sdd will soon use the new SATA 3.0 spec :eek:
http://www.theregister.co.uk/2009/05/27/sata_revision_3_0/
it will in effect make hdd/ssd twice as fast.
It's about time the old HD always seems to lag behind in development.
These will likely require new MB and heaven knows what else though.
Sounds very nice, let's hope they don't cost too much so we mortals can afford them ;). And as Matt wrote we probably will have to buy a new MB to use them... oh the downside of technology

Why they couldn't just call it SATA 3 instead of SATA Revision 3.0 I don't understand, everyone will refer to it as SATA 3!
It's a little misleading unfortunately, not to ruin the party but it won't make all new HDDs faster. SATA 2 doubled the transfer rate of the interface but it's much faster than any standard HDD is capable of already, upping it to 6Gb/s.
1Gb = 1000Mb = 125MB
Gb = Gigabit
Mb = Megabit
MB = Megabyte
So 6Gb/s interface = 750MB/s which is three times the max read of a Vertex SSD. It will futureproof new flash bases HDDs but won't make mechanical drives any faster:(
Yeah it's still pretty nice though.
I wonder when this will be avaible "to the public" i.e when companies start selling Mobo's supporting SATA Revision 3.0 ... I agree with you Neil, it's so stupid putting Revision in there, especially if people get annoyed when you write SATA 3, why not just call it SATA 3 for simplicity?
