Ooo, I love the SLI GTX 285's!!
And the 2x60GB OCZ vertex in Raid!!

Mate lucky you, won't ya run some benchmarks when ya get it??
Mine came out disappointing. ^_^ but not too fussed! HAHA

MrDJ
21-05-09, 13:07
what benchmark scores did you get Squeals

It was 96xx something...
on default settings.

Considering GTX 260M, I thought it would be higher. But Andrew told me the CPU matters a lot so P8600 doesn't deliver quite as much for a 10k+ score I guess.

Looks like a very nice config Matt.

One thing I have added to the information pop ups that I am finishing off now is the RAM speeds. Because the RAM now euns of specific multipliers it is tied in directly to the CPU overclock speed. Knowing that your system will go out at 3.6 - 3.8GHz we can run 1600MHz RAM at either 1440MHz or 1800MHz. So I would actually suggest spending an extra £20 and getting 1866MHz then we can get you better value on the memory.

Hope that makes sense.

Matt
24-05-09, 13:24
Ok thanks Neil.

Do you mean the 6GB OCZ DDR3 1866MHz Reaper 8-8-8-28 3x2GB Dimms?

From what Andrew was telling me though isn't this slower due to the timmings?

Matt
24-05-09, 13:30
I'm also reconsidering my GFX card choice as from what I have gathered on various forums 2xGTX285s maybe overkill for gaming.

I am debating on whether to go for a single 285 or 2x260s in SLI.

The 260s in SLI are only about 10 to 15 fps behind the 285s in SLI on average sometimes not even that and of course are quite a bit cheaper.

The trouble is how many games support SLI and therefore would the single 285 be the better choice.

This configuration business is driving me nuts.

Yup, however lower timings and higher frequency both give better performance, that's where it gets confusing. Because of the options we can run RAM at it makes more sense to run 1866 RAM at 1800 than 1600 RAM at 1440. We might be able to lower timings if we have to run RAM lower than it's rated frequency, similarly we might have to loosen timings in order to overclock RAM above it's rated speed. Ultimately it really doesn't make enough difference in the system performance to really worry about at all which is why we always prioritise the CPU clock over RAM speed.

It all comes down to what size monitor you are going to be gaming on. Personally I wouldn't go with 260 SLI as a single 295 will give very similar performance and leave you with more space on the motherboard as well as less restriction in the cooling loop. Pretty much every game available supports SLI, but again if you are only using a 17" monitor then there's no point in going for anything more than a single 285.

Matt
24-05-09, 18:41
Thanks Neil.

It gets pretty confusing doesn't it with memory but I think i'm with you.

As for the GFX I will be gaming on a 24" 1920 x1200 monitor and ocassionaly at 1080p on my plasma.

So from what you are saying 2x285s is not overkill then is that right?

Glad to hear that SLI is supported in most games.

I have been getting a lot of conflicting advice on the forums and obviously not all of it was any good.;)

neil@kobalt
24-05-09, 19:46
The argument is that you could get away with a single 285 @ 1920 x 1200 but you won't be able to up all the game settings to max and being able to run with all the quality and AA/AF at max really makes a difference. Especially if you're paying for a 24" monitor there's no point scrimping on GPU power. Some people don't like SLI because it doesn't scale in a linear way so as I'm sure you have already read it will give you ~30% fps increase over a single card, not 100%. However it's at higher resolutions and higher quality game settings that SLI comes into it's own:)

Thanks Neil that's the best and simplest explanation i've heard.:)

Nice config Matt, going to be a very powerful system:)

The login details are on the order confirmation that will be emailed to you on Monday, it isn't automatic at the moment as we are still having the system updated.

Matt
30-05-09, 16:55
Thanks Neil, the only thing that I forgot to add was the Kobalt system recovery options could you sort that out for me and charge accordingly as i'm not sure which were the best options to choose.:)

Also if there is anything that I have gotten wrong please feel free to ammend it.

From when I get in till the delivery cut off time.

Yes, I know. There will be plenty of pictures, trust me.

There will also be lots of pictures of my two:
Monitors,
Keyboards,
Mice,
Mouse mats,
Headsets,
PC's

But only one printer. :/ Although my dad has one in his office. ;)

Haha I am so eager to get it. But I went into my local shop to find the CPC issue with the 24" monitor feature, only to find that they don't stock it. ASDA may have a few copies left, although I'm not holding my breath. Damnit!

18-06-09, 13:34
Well just booted it and it loaded in seconds, I can't believe how quiet it is given the spec it's quieter than my old little Shuttle.:D

No more grinding Raptor hooray.

My only gripe is due to my own fault and not Kobalt's.

The PC has a standard cut out window which I didn't want and can't believe I missed on the configuration.

I'll reiterate that this is my own error.:(

I'm hoping that Andrew may be able to sort something out for me, pretty please.:)

andrew@kobalt

Yup, we use anti static bubble wrap in all systems for these reasons. Just a little reminder that if anyone ever boxes up their desktops again you must use anti static bubble wrap, not the normal stuff - you can tell as the anti static is pink!

Glad you're happy with the noise (lack of) and speed of the system though Matt, believe Andrew is sorting out a side panel for you:)
