just bought 5 games in the steam sale for £21.85 :D
just tested them to make sure they run ok and so far 1 of them freezes on the opening screen even though the music is still playing. have to turn off at mains button. after re boot the screen setup is on its lowest and stuck on 800x600
i thought after re boot it would have reverted back to its original setting of 1680x1050
the game causing the problem is rainbow six vegas (not 2). it checks for updates on startup and says there arent any so it doesnt need new or updated drivers. at least on my third attempt it lets me go to task manager and it is still running in there but at least i can close it down from there instead of a power off.
any ideas people ;)

this is the screen shot its stuck on. just tried again and left it for 15 minutes. music playing in background but still no movement.

just for information this has now been sorted.

problem and fix:

Turning off the steam overlay in Steam: File > Settings > In-Game > uncheck 'Enable Steam Community In-Game'.

game plays perfectly now.

Awwww. That's a shame. I LOVE having the community thing active. I've made a few friends on L4D and have quite a nice team. I quite enjoy the infrequent little chat when in the middle of a game. It allows me to keep an eye on when a friend logs into Steam and what game they start playing so that I can join them in it if I am a bit bored. :)

firstly dont panic Cat
so far ive only found this 1 game thats been affected by this. tom clancys rainbow six vegas 1 (2 works fine).
if a steam game wont load then this is the first thing to try. ive got 12 games from steam now and this is the only one affected so far.

Just so you know (bear this in mind), Steam is very, VERY 'buggy'. I often have game freezes. Often during load times. And their servers have some of the most incredible bugs. I've been killed by the front of a car... I've failed to see zombies that others are looking at... I've been taken to a Versus game server when I started a campaign one... I've been unfairly switched to a losing team side (this latter bug is being fixed by a new patch update I am being told)... and the list goes on. Steam needs to improve a bit. I still love it though. :)

I must admit i quite like steam. Don't seam to suffer any of the prolems that other people do. I treat it a bit like xbox live

and yet more problems :(

three problems so far with various games bought from steam.

so far im having problems with FarCry (original) and Attack on Pearl Harbour

FarCry
when trying to log into multiplayer mode it asks for user name and password. sometimes this works and sometimes it fails. finally after it does let me in it then asks for CD Key which shows in steam pop up window in bottom right corner. after entering it it says invalid cd key please re enter.
ive tried in all variations using capitols, lower case, with/without - between but none works Arghh!! :(

secondly multiplayer in attack on pearl harbour.

bought attack on pearl harbour from steam the other day but have only ever been able to play twice on multiplayer.
it shows various servers to join that has players already there and it seems to load fine but as soon as the game starts if you look in the players list its empty and then error connecting to server appears within 5 seconds. close that box and go back to menu and the server is still there with the players in it.
at first i thought it could be my avg pro firewall but then if it was how could i play a couple of times in the past without any problems. single player is fine.

any ideas would be greatly appreciated with the other 2 problems..

Hmmm... I've had lots of buggy servers with Steam.. including "loop bug" lobbies that never connect to a dedicated server to start a game. I think a lot of issues you are having could just be Steam being Steam. A friend gets kicked out of a game and out of Steam sometimes, yet remains connected to his internet.

I'm having an issue with a game I bought from Steam (I-Fluid) that is missing a file and won't load (not sure if I have already mentioned this earlier).
