Heya there. Interested in buying a Nexus and have a few questions about it. Bear in mind I don't know that much about technical stuff but I'm after a gaming laptop that will last a while!

I was planning to upgrade the graphics to the GT card. Does the 15.4 screen really do it justice? And with the chassis being smaller than the 17", can it handle it fine? So, there isn't a chance of it overheating or goin' crazy?

Also, is it easy to upgrade the ram or even the processor after buying the laptop? I've been told that upgrading the graphics card is a lot harder.

How does the Montevino differ from the Santa Rosa? The Nexus comes with the Montevino chipset, right?

And finally, how long will it take to assemble and ship? I live in England and would like it before the 6th September reallyy.

Thanks very much!

Hey,

The below is from Andrew@Kobalt

As the Nexus (just like the Mojave) is a high end, gaming orientated notebook it will be warmer than a standard laptop with say an 8600 etc. Running at idle I would expect the CPU to be in the 35 degree area and the GPU around 50-60. Under load you're looking at CPU at 45 and GPU upto 80. Heat will generally be limited to the rear exhaust although the area just to the right of the touchpad will get warm because the chipset and harddrive are located there.. nothing uncomfortable though.

In regards to the GT or GTS the cards are really similiar and the performance gain will not be 'that' noticeable after looking at benchmarks and specifications, however in regards to the screen the 15.4" and the 1650 *1050 with be fine ^_^, though what you need to bear in mind is this a mobile card so the performance is on par for a desktop 8600GT->8800GTX, the native resolution should be spot on for most games (Crysis for example with struggle to run @ High->Ultra)

Mine is ordered with the GT and as an avid gamer who has been using a 14.4" with an 8600GS 256mb DDR this will be a lot better :p

The differences in the platform can be reviewed here:http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/intel-centrino-2,1969-6.html

Also here is the refresh chart provided by Intel:-

The shipping times that have been quoted recently are 10-15 days (so around 2 weeks)

Hey..

Blimey stonking reply, do you want a job? :p

@abscondicon

Think the above post covered pretty much everything. Just to add a few things.. Montevina supports DDR3 memory (Santa Rosa was only DDR2), and new, faster processors (faster front side bus). It is easy to upgrade the memory and processor. The graphics cards can be upgraded but a new heatsink/ copper jacket has to be custom made for any new card so only what is released/ provided by Clevo will be supported.

At the moment we have quite a lot of people waiting for their systems as we are just now starting to build them. I would say for any new order to allow 12 working days for delivery.

Hope that helps.

Brgds
Andrew

Should I get Vista 32 bit or 64 bit?

I would say at the moment around 90% of systems we build have Vista 64 on them. Of that we have only heard of a few games that cause any issues at all. Those being EVE Online and BF2142. There is a fix for BF2142 which a forum member Robert Leech has found.

With the release of Vista SP1 and a general improvement of drivers and software we have no problems recommending 64-Bit Vista. This is particularly so with notebooks as the ability to use all 4GB of RAM has a big impact. Some people have more niggles than others but overall I think it's worth it.

32 or 64 vista..thoughts? (http://www.kobaltcomputers.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?t=203&highlight=vista)

For 4GB of RAM you need a x64 operating system in order to utilise the rest of the 1GB.

I have used x64 fo 3 years now and will not go back ^_^

Anyone know what temperature the HDD runs at in a Nexus?

its a bit hard to tell at the moment as it seems that other components within close proximity to the HDD are causing the warm temp. what it reads though is 50-60c

I'm trying to keep up with the discussion on this. Bit concerned to be honest. Could it have adverse effects?
