View Full Version : Nvidia Driver Problem
Hiya - I keep getting a driver problem with the graphics card when using SL.
I tried to uninstall the drivers using the tool as directed and downloaded what I thought were the updated drivers for my card. However when I run the installation file it tells me that the uninstall version is for windows 32 bit and won't run - then I get a message saying that the drivers are for 64 bit and that I'm not running a 64 bit???? Which I obviously am.
Any ideas ? :(

Hi there,
Sorry to hear you're having problems!
Here's a step by step guide on the best way of updating the drivers, see if it helps!
Download driver cleaner here: http://www.kobaltcomputers.co.uk/drivers/DCProSetup.exe (http://www.kobaltcomputers.co.uk/drivers/DCProSetup.exe)
[is a great program which will delete all traces of drivers as sometimes when you uninstall them they leave behind files which can cause issues when you come to install new drivers. We’ll use this in a minute
Download the latest Vista 64-bit NVIDIA drivers (174.60) here: http://www.kobaltcomputers.co.uk/drivers/NVIDIA/174.60Vista64/17460_vista64.exe (http://www.kobaltcomputers.co.uk/drivers/NVIDIA/174.60Vista64/17460_vista64.exe)
Extract/ copy the files to a temporary directory such as c:\temp<O:p
Go to the control panel > program and features > scroll down the list and find NVIDIA > then select NVIDIA and click uninstall. It will ask if you want to restart the system.. click yes
Press F8 on startup and go into windows in safe mode. <O:p
Run driver cleaner and select NVIDIA drivers.. then clean. <O:p
Go to the control panel > system> device manager > graphics card. Right click on any present and click uninstall
Restart the system and go into windows normally. Install the NVIDIA 174.60 drivers which you put into a temporary folder
Restart the system.. and fingers crossed all should be well!
Hopefully that has sorted it. I'll keep an eye on it.
There have been some annoying niggles with the laptop since I got it such as frequently hanging after boot and the occasional blue screen of death.
I wonder whether that's to do with me going for 64bit? and the teething problems of a new OS?

Ok let us know if the niggles or BSOD's start again. NVIDIA drivers do seem to be causing some issues for people so hopefully the new drivers will fix it.
It shouldn't be a problem with 64-bit or Vista these days.. since SP1 has come out it's much better.
If it does blue screen again.. have a look at the event log and let us know what it says. If you haven't looked at it before here's how:
Open the control panel > administrative tools > event viewer > windows logs >
then look through applcation, security and system for an error. If there is one let us know the error number and the description and we should be able to narrow down the problem.
Brgds
Andrew
